Following a successful proof-of-concept project, Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) has begun mass production of tires using hydrogen and solar energy at its Shirakawa plant in Fukushima, Japan. According to SRI, each year the plant can produce 10,350 tons of tires of various types.
The project, initiated in August 2021, centered around the use of a hydrogen boiler and solar panels installed at the factory site to generate steam for tire production. The steam operates a Neo-T01 high-precision metal-core production system developed by SRI.
SRI has set its sights on expanding the use of hydrogen energy to encompass all processes at the Shirakawa plant. The group has also outlined plans to formulate a detailed strategy for the integration of hydrogen energy at other plants within Japan and internationally.
