Michelin North America has made a US$50m investment in American Synthetic Rubber Company (ASRC) to construct a natural gas boiler facility. The new facility will reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The project entails the decommissioning and dismantling of the coal boilers at ASRC, and is driven by Michelin’s commitment to reducing ASRC’s environmental impact — less CO2, less water, less waste. It also includes the installation of a new boiler house with three natural gas boilers and a new boiler water treatment process.
The investment will also introduce more energy-efficient steam production through advanced natural gas boilers, a reverse osmosis feedwater system and heat recovery technologies. These improvements, according to the companies, will enhance air quality, eliminate coal ash waste and reduce water usage.
“At Michelin, we are continually looking for areas for reduction in the environmental impact of our operations and improvement of the quality of life for our communities,” said Alexis Garcin, president and CEO of Michelin North America.
“This new gas boiler will serve this purpose, and we are very proud of this investment that will further reinforce our stewardship in the environmental protection of the Louisville community.”
