In the tire design and testing field, accurate data is essential for understanding tire performance. XSensor’s High-Speed (HS) Tire system – on show at Tire Technology Expo – is a solution for tire designers and test engineers, providing high-resolution contact-patch pressure data necessary for analyzing tire behavior at high speeds.
The HS system can be quickly assembled and configured for data recording, typically in about 10 minutes. It captures fine tread details and records at frequencies over 450Hz, even at speeds up to 150km/h.
Elaborating on the assembly and configuration process of the system, Gabriel Grenier-Baird, marketing director at XSensor, said, “Advances in proprietary hardware have resulted in much faster recording rates for high-resolution pressure sensors. Additionally, advances in the dynamic response rate of sensors mean cleaner images and more reliable pressure data are available.
“These two technological advances have resulted in the ability to capture dynamic tire footprint measurements at speeds above 100km/h.”
Another aspect to consider is portability. Systems now offer fast setup and the ability to move from one test track to another or to different parts of the test track. Portability and bringing a system from the lab to the track should be at the top of mind.
“The system captures clear, complete and high-resolution images at any speed,” Grenier-Baird said. “The data is available within seconds of recording, and there is little post-processing required. This enables engineers to review data immediately while on the track, make adjustments and get immediate feedback on the changes.”
The system’s high spatial resolution is designed to allow the user to visualize the fine details in a tire, such as the sipes, grooves, tie bars and notches. Using a sensor with too low a resolution will blur these features and prevent the user from seeing the dynamic interaction these features have with rolling speed.
