A new high-performance all-season tire for SUVs, the Scorpion MS, has been launched by Pirelli. The Scorpion MS has been engineered to deliver grip in a wide range of weather conditions, with its development drawing on the tire maker’s Eco-Safety Design philosophy, which aims to combine high safety standards with a reduced environmental impact.
To meet the requirements of a range of differing markets, the latest Pirelli tire has been designed to deliver a long service life – demanded by the US market – and comfort, which is demanded by Asia.
A total of 75% of all Scorpion MS co-development projects feature Pirelli’s Elect technology for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. This includes the Maserati Grecale Folgore, for which Pirelli developed two new Scorpion MS fitments consisting of a 255/50/R19 square setup, in addition to a 255/45R20 for the front and a 295/40/R20 at the rear.
Additional technologies that Pirelli has included on various versions of the Scorpion MS include its Seal Inside anti-puncture system, Run Flat and the PNCS (Pirelli Noise Cancelling System), to reduce noise heard inside the cabin while driving.
During the research and development stage, Pirelli’s engineers worked on the formulation of a new polymer which used certain resins to favor grip in addition to wet and dry braking. The tire maker also designed the sipes for optimized performance on snow.
Compared to the Scorpion Verde All Season, road noise levels emitted by the Scorpion MS have been reduced by 25%. Rolling resistance is also low due to Pirelli’s optimized compounds and tread pattern.
