Continental has launched a tire designed specifically for urban transportation, known as the Conti Urban HA 5.
The tire addresses needs such as varying road conditions, frequent stops, heavy traffic and the rising use of electric buses. The tire has a thick sidewall and robust compounds designed to provide durability following knocks against curbs and other obstacles. The tire’s design also supports retreading and recycling, extending its lifecycle and reducing environmental impact.
Tire longevity is a primary concern for urban bus fleets. The Conti Urban HA 5 features an enhanced tread cap and base compound, specifically formulated for urban road conditions. The company says this provides higher mileage and reduces the frequency of tire replacement.
Fuel efficiency and reduced emissions are also important factors, particularly in terms of sustainable urban operations. The Conti Urban HA 5 has been designed for improved rolling resistance, which directly translates to better fuel efficiency. Lower rolling resistance reduces the energy required to move the vehicle, thus cutting down on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The multipitch technology also helps reduce perceived noise for passengers and drivers. The tires have received an A rating for noise on the EU tire label.
Hinnerk Kaiser, head of product Development EMEA at Continental, said, “The Conti Urban HA 5 has been developed with direct input from fleet managers and urban transport operators to address their most pressing needs.
“The new tread pattern and multipitch technology enhance wet performance and reduce the perceived noise, contributing to a safer and more comfortable ride.”
When equipped with ContiConnect sensors, the tire can be monitored digitally so fleet managers can access precise pressure and temperature data. This digital integration supports predictive maintenance and helps prevent unexpected downtimes.
