Electric off-road racing championship Extreme E has extended its partnership with Continental, its official tire supplier and founding partner.
The agreement, signed on January 11, 2024, seeks to solidify the commitment of both organizations to increase environmental awareness in motorsport, according to the companies.
Continental was a founding partner of Extreme E at its inception in 2019. The supplier has designed and produced ultra-high-performance tires tailored to the demands of the championship’s challenging off-road races and the characteristics of Extreme E’s fully electric Odyssey 21 SUVs.
Continental’s partnership goes beyond race products. The company has also recently donated approximately 400m2 of rubber paving stones – from the Extreme E CrossContact racing tire – to build a new basketball court in Hannover, Germany. The ‘Turning racing tires into living space’ initiative aims to give children in the area a safe and entertaining place to play, run and train.
Ali Russell, managing director of Extreme E, expressed excitement about the continued support from Continental: “Continental’s continued dedication to creating bespoke tyres that perform exceptionally in the world’s harshest terrains aligns perfectly with our mission to drive change through motorsport. Their unwavering support plays a pivotal role in the success of Extreme E and the message we aim to convey.”
Claudio Toldi, head of marketing communications, replacement tires EMEA, Continental, said, “The electric off-road racing championship series is the ideal platform for us to test new tire technologies and developments before their series launch for the passenger car sector.
“In 2022, for example, we tested our ContiRe.Tex technology for the first time in the Extreme E tire. Our latest tire consists of around 43% recycled and renewable materials – in this way we actively shape and contribute to a sustainable motorsport and more environmental awareness.”
