Nokian Tyres’ factory in Oradea, Romania, has obtained the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus. This means it can use sustainable, ISCC Plus certified raw materials to produce new tires.
Nokian will introduce the certified raw materials when it launches new flagship products. The certified materials will help the company reach one of its sustainability goals: to increase the share of recycled or renewable raw materials in its tires to 50% by 2030.
Replacing fossil-based raw materials with recycled and renewable ones supports the circular economy and decreases the carbon footprint of tires, making them more environmentally sustainable.
“Nokian Tyres wants to answer consumer needs by creating tires in which sustainability is an essential feature alongside safety, driving comfort and performance,” said Teemu Soini, VP of innovations and development at Nokian Tyres. “We already use recycled and renewable raw materials in our tires, and being able to use the ISCC Plus certified materials in addition to them accelerates the work and complements our own raw material research and innovations.”
The Nokian factory in Romania was inaugurated in September 2024. The company says it sets an industry benchmark by being the world’s first full-scale zero-CO2-emission tire factory. All energy used at the factory comes from zero-emission sources such as wind, hydro, biomass, solar energy or a combination of these. Steam for tire manufacturing is also produced without the help of fossil fuels.
ISCC is a globally applicable sustainability certification system. The ISCC Plus certification ensures compliance with high ecological and social sustainability requirements, and traceability throughout the supply chain.
