Bridgestone’s Firestone Liberia natural rubber farm has earned the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus recognition, in acknowledgement of the reduction of its environmental impact, efficient resource utilization and resilience to climate change. It is the world’s first natural rubber farm to receive this recognition.
The natural rubber harvested and processed at the farm is sent to Bridgestone’s tire plants in North America and Europe, supporting the production of sustainable tires like the Bridgestone Turanza EV, which incorporates 50% ISCC Plus-certified recycled and renewable materials.
The Firestone Liberia farm covers 118,000 acres and employs around 4,000 individuals. The ISCC Plus certification also recognizes the farm’s implementation of good agricultural practices, ensuring proper working conditions and complying with local regulations. Alongside its agricultural practices, Firestone Liberia contributes to the local community by providing free medical care to its staff and their dependents and operating numerous schools.
The ISCC Plus certification highlights the company’s progress on achieving its stated goals of achieving carbon neutrality and producing tires exclusively from sustainable materials by 2050.
“As we progress in our transformation to a sustainable solutions company, we are making incredible progress toward sustainable manufacturing. The ISCC Plus certification is a pivotal milestone which recognizes our actions to sustainably growing and processing natural rubber as we accelerate our progress toward using 100% sustainable materials in our products by 2050,” said Rick Burnett, vice president, internal manufacturing division, Bridgestone Americas.
