Cabot Corporation: global application development lead - industrial products

Billerica, Massachusetts, USA

Position summary:
The Global Applications Development Lead Identifies, initiates, and leads global applications development projects for existing and new materials applied to industrial rubber products. Assembles cross-functional project teams to drive new product/applications development projects through the Stage/Gate process. Leads a global group of specialists and technicians in several Applications lab locations to develop and standardize sound experimental formulations and rigorous testing protocols to support projects and industry. Works in partnership with Global and Regional Marketing Manager s and Technical Service to define global segment strategy and application development priorities. Leads customer interactions designed to innovation in applications and to expand our existing and new product applications reach.

Job responsibilities:
- Defines technical capabilities required within region for the industrial rubber products market segment. Develops and maintains “center of excellence” knowledge and expertise in order to provide insight of performance in applications.
- Works with regional Applications Development labs to define priorities and allocate resources. Manages complex product & applications development projects involving integration of multiple sites and functional areas.
- Leads design of creative solutions to applications challenges; works closely with customers, R&D and others to further develop applications knowledge in support of new product and new market development projects.
- Oversees lab testing and analysis of new applications and systemic and/or complex product performance issues. Develops and enforces statistically rigorous applications test capabilities and works towards development and implementation of global testing standardization. Develops novel testing methods.
- Provides guidance to of a group of lab technicians and other technology staff.
- Leads deep and effective customer interactions to identify their unmet needs and translate these unmet needs into project proposals.
- Protects company technology through adherence to highest intellectual property standards and provides input into segment IP strategy.

Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Material Science, or Engineering. M.Sc. or PhD preferred.
- 7+ year experience working with elastomeric materials, including prior lab and project management experience. R&D and/or Applications Development experience in the rubber products industry preferred.
- Applications Knowledge - Deep and broad expertise in rubber composite applications and industries. Understands full range of competitive or substitute solutions available in the market in relation to Cabot particles. Able to connect megatrends to industry trends and anticipate relevant customer needs and potential solutions.
- Experimental Rigor - High expertise in area of experiment design and use of statistical methods. Recognized for ability to develop novel performance evaluation methods. Skilled at rapid prototyping and application engineering issues. Ability to summarize findings, analyze data, and draw reliable conclusions.
- Project Management - Ability to lead complex, cross-functional, long-term projects; use of advanced project management tools with risk mitigation methods. Able to mobilize internal and external resources. Recognized for ability to drive projects to completion and meet deliverables within set timeframes.
- Customer Interaction - Deep familiarity with existing customer needs, industry trends, and future development roadmap. Ability to extract critical information from customer regarding end use and competitive position and present Cabot products in this context. Perceived by customer as a trusted partner who can meet current and future application needs.
- Organizational Integration - Perceived as an effective integrator by the business with ability to lead assignments outside own area. Successful in leading cross-functional projects, as well as clarifying complex targets and deliverables. Shares knowledge between sites and functional groups; can integrate external expertise into Cabot’s application development.
- Results Focus - Shows high degree of accountability and commitment; takes initiative to drive projects that may not have clear ownership; “gets things done.” Keeps safety as highest priority while driving results.
