Show review 2014: Best yet!

With record numbers of visitors, exhibitors and conference delegates (3,400 attendees in total), Tire Technology Expo 2014 has been the most successful yet

Compiled by Rachel Evans

The hall floor was home to over 210 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations, technologies and equipment, such as ZF’s new six-station endurance tester. Its compact design keeps the installation space small, and a drum driven by an integrated motor frees up an extra – sixth – station for testing.

Visitors were attracted to 4JET’s booth to learn more about its new SCANNECT solution, which individually marks every tire with a unique and permanent QR (quick response) code that can be identified with most smartphone camera apps. The company has developed a novel laser marking process that can engrave an individual datamatrix code into a tire’s sidewall. The high-contrast engraving can be read using public domain apps available for Apple iOS or Android devices, helping to trace the tire throughout its lifecycle as well as enabling product identification that can directly link to a web-based CRM database.

Impressed with the diversity of innovative products was showgoer C B Rajan, projects manager at Apollo Tyres India: “I’ve seen many pieces of exciting machinery, for example automated tire handling solutions, mould manufacturing equipment and laser engraving machines for tires,” he commented. “We have a project that could require a lot of machinery, so the show is a good place meet with people and discuss this.”

As ever, the show provided the perfect platform to meet new and existing contacts: “It’s been a really great networking experience and we are now in contact with one particular group that has been very hard to reach previously,” said Guido Fona, sales manager at first-time exhibitor, Color Service, which had an eye-catching demonstration of its fully automated chemical weighing system, new to the tire industry.

Another product debut, showcased at Kelviplast’s stand, was its energy-saving Kelvizient solution for tempering and cooling units, which, the company claims, reduces power consumption by up to 75% per year. It is based on innovative control technology that automatically adjusts the tempering system constantly to the optimum operating point. Existing temperature control systems can be upgraded at any time with the Kelvizient solution.

First-time exhibitor Bandall International displayed its new label idea, which hasn’t even hit the market yet: “The show has been the ideal platform to gain feedback from the tire manufacturers on our new product,” reported Rinze van der Vinne, sales manager. Instead of using a sticker to attach the labels to the tire, Bandall’s invention ties around the tire, cleanly and neatly, which is better for the environment. “We had a really good response from all the big tire makers and we’ve now made the first meetings to develop our invention even further. We also received good feedback from Continental, Vredestein, Dunlop and Bridgestone.” The company hopes to launch the product in the next few months.

The always-popular conference was packed with presentations from over 120 experts covering critical industry topics including the trend towards more sustainability throughout the tire’s lifecycle; the increased requirement for lower rolling resistance; and breakthrough research in new materials – to name just a few of the subjects discussed. Expert speakers included Eric-Philippe Vinesse of Michelin, Dr Shunichi Yamazaki from the Intelligent Vehicle Research Institute, and last year’s Young Scientist Prize winner, Lewis Tunnicliffe, plus many more.

The Awards Gala Dinner, which was held at the conclusion of Day 1, saw 700 exhibitors and delegates enjoy a glamorous and valuable networking opportunity. For the full list of this year’s proud Tire Technology Expo Award winners, click here.

Dates for Tire Technology Expo 2015 are 10-12 February!
