Arctic Falls to open indoor test facility

To help meet customer demands, Arctic Falls proving ground is now constructing an indoor winter test facility

A new indoor testing facility is to be constructed at Arctic Falls proving ground, Sweden. Construction of the new facility has already begun, and is expected to open at the beginning of 2016. It will be 400 x 15m in area, and offer a height of 4.5m, enabling tests with many kinds of vehicles, including heavy trucks. Its layout is designed for tire testing, but it can be used also for other kinds of tests.

“We have previously offered indoor testing in an ice hockey arena, but the new facility will be much bigger and offer both snow and ice tracks," said Arctic Falls AB CEO Jonas Jalar (below center).

“This adds an extra dimension since the conditions will be controlled to perfection for tests where it is vital that the climate stays the same, test after test.”

The facility will be built as part of a larger project that also includes a skiing tunnel; the combination of winter testing and skiing has initiated a cooperation with Luleå Technical University, which currently has a focus on snow research.

“For the needs of our winter testing and professional skiers, an increased knowledge about snow and ice is of major interest. There are many kinds of snow and we predict that this exciting research will reveal new possibilities for our clients to improve their products’ winter performance,” noted Jalar.
